Health And Safety Policy

Health and Safety Policy For Gardeners South Tottenham

Gardeners South Tottenham is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors and the general public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety and applies to all gardening, landscaping and related activities undertaken by our business.

Our Health And Safety Commitments

We will, so far as is reasonably practicable, ensure that our work is carried out without risk to health and safety. We are committed to:

Identifying and managing hazards associated with gardening work, including power tools, manual handling, use of chemicals, access equipment and vehicle movements.

Complying with all relevant UK health and safety legislation and accepted industry best practice for horticulture and grounds maintenance.

Providing clear information, instruction, supervision and training so that our team can work safely and competently.

Consulting with workers on health and safety matters and encouraging a culture of reporting and continuous improvement.

Reviewing this policy regularly and updating our procedures when required.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the company management. Management will ensure that adequate resources are made available for implementing this policy and that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning and decision making.

Supervisors and lead gardeners are responsible for day to day implementation of safe systems of work, carrying out checks on equipment and work areas, and ensuring that any concerns are escalated promptly.

Every employee and contractor working on behalf of Gardeners South Tottenham has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of those who may be affected by their actions. This includes following training and instructions, using protective equipment correctly and reporting hazards, accidents or near misses without delay.

Risk Assessment And Safe Working Practices

Risk assessments are carried out for our typical gardening tasks and for specific sites where required. These assessments consider hazards such as uneven ground, overhead obstructions, traffic, public access, utilities, weather conditions, chemicals and machinery.

Based on these assessments we develop safe working procedures that are communicated to our team. Examples include safe use of lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and other powered equipment, as well as safer manual handling techniques for soil, turf, plants and waste.

Work will only be carried out when conditions are suitable and safe systems can be followed. If at any time staff believe that work cannot be done safely, they are required to stop and contact a supervisor.

Training, Competence And Supervision

All new staff receive an induction that covers our health and safety rules, site conduct, emergency arrangements and the correct use of tools and personal protective equipment. Task specific training is provided for equipment such as powered cutting tools, access equipment and garden machinery.

Only trained and competent staff may operate machinery or carry out higher risk activities such as working at height, using powered cutting tools above shoulder height or handling particular chemicals and treatments. Where necessary, staff will hold appropriate recognised certificates of competence.

Supervision is provided appropriate to the level of risk and the experience of the worker. Less experienced team members will work under closer supervision until they have demonstrated competence.

Personal Protective Equipment

We provide suitable personal protective equipment for the tasks being carried out. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and waterproof or cut resistant garments where appropriate.

Employees must use this equipment as instructed and report any loss or damage immediately so that items can be repaired or replaced. Personal protective equipment is regarded as a last line of defence and is used in conjunction with, not instead of, other control measures.

Machinery, Tools And Equipment Safety

All gardening machinery and tools are selected, used and maintained to reduce health and safety risks. Equipment is inspected regularly and serviced in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements.

Guards and safety devices are never to be removed or bypassed. Defective or damaged tools must not be used and must be reported so they can be taken out of service and repaired or replaced.

Fuel, oils and other substances are stored and handled safely to prevent fire, spills or environmental harm.

Chemicals, Pesticides And Environmental Care

When using any chemicals, including fertilisers, weed treatments or pest control products, we follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and carry out suitable risk assessments. Where appropriate we will use alternatives that present lower risks to people, pets and wildlife.

Only trained staff may apply such products, and they must wear the required protective equipment and ensure that clients and members of the public are kept away from treated areas for the recommended time.

Waste, including green waste and any packaging, is removed or managed responsibly so as not to create hazards or environmental damage.

Working At Height

Some gardening tasks, such as tree pruning, hedge cutting or gutter clearance, may involve work at height. We avoid working at height where possible and, when it cannot be avoided, we use appropriate access equipment and fall prevention methods.

Ladders and other access equipment are inspected before use and used only on stable ground. Only competent staff trained in working at height procedures may undertake such tasks.

Protecting Clients, Visitors And The Public

We recognise our duty to protect anyone who may be affected by our work. Work areas are organised to minimise risks to clients, visitors, neighbours and passers by. This may include cordoning off areas, using clear signage and scheduling higher risk tasks at less busy times where practical.

Equipment is never left running or unattended in a way that could present a danger. At the end of each visit, the work area is tidied, tools are removed or secured and any remaining hazards are highlighted to the client where necessary.

Accidents, Incidents And Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses are to be reported as soon as reasonably practicable to management. We will investigate significant events to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

Basic first aid supplies are carried or accessible for our teams and staff are briefed on emergency arrangements relevant to the locations in which they work. In the event of a serious incident, work will be stopped and appropriate emergency services contacted.

Monitoring And Review

We monitor our health and safety performance through site checks, equipment inspections, incident reports and feedback from staff and clients. Lessons learned are built into updated risk assessments and procedures.

This health and safety policy is reviewed at least annually, and sooner if there are significant changes in our activities, relevant legislation or industry guidance. The latest version is made available to all staff and to clients on request.
